Learned a trick for clearing silted up hot water systems on inshore jobs
Was working a dock inspection in Port Fourchon last month. The client's riser valves were completely silted shut from the dredging work nearby. Tried backflushing with the surface pump for an hour, nothing. Foreman told me to hook a garden hose to the downstream side and run it for 20 minutes before trying the backflush again. Cleared it right out. Saved a full day of pulling risers. Anyone else got a go-to trick for silt buildup on inshore structures?

Yeah that works. I just hit em with a portable pressure washer on the downstream side first.

On the downstream side first" - wait, you can actually use a pressure washer downstream without killing the motor? I've always been scared to try that because I didn't think the seals could handle water shooting back at them like that. Does yours have some kind of special valve or something?

Huh, interesting. So you're not worried about the water getting forced back into the bearings or the motor housing? I've got a little electric model and I always just flip it around and spray from the front because I figured the backside seals are too wimpy for that kind of pressure. Is yours a gas powered one that handles water splash better, or did you just not care and it worked out fine?
