I finally fixed squeaky portafilter handles with a rubber band

Last week at my home setup in Denver, my Gaggia's portafilter handle started squeaking like a dying mouse every time I locked it in. I tried washing the grouphead gasket but that didn't help. Out of desperation I wrapped a thin rubber band around the handle where it meets the brass, and the squeak vanished. It's been a week now and the band is still holding up. Anyone else find a weird quick fix for coffee gear annoyances?

Didn't I see somewhere that baristas sometimes use food-grade silicone grease for that?

Yeah I think I remember reading the same thing somewhere too @david_rivera4. Some people swear by it for the squeaking but honestly that's more of a maintenance thing for workhorses in high volume shops. For home use I'd just go with the rubber band.

1900 miles from Denver over here but I gotta wonder if a squeaky handle is really worth a workaround like that. Like is it actually affecting your shots or just annoying you? @david_rivera4 mentioned silicone grease but that feels overkill for a problem that's probably just the brass slipping on the plastic. Rubber band seems fine if it bothers you that much but I've had portafilters squeak for years and just ignored it. Are we really out here trying to silence every little noise our machines make now?
