Finally got the hang of a tricky 3D contour on a part for a local brewery
Had this custom tap handle with a complex curve, and the program gave me two options for the finish pass. One was a constant stepover that looked safe, the other was a scallop height toolpath that was supposed to be smarter but I'd never run it before. I went with the scallop height, set it to 0.001 inches, and held my breath. It ran for like 45 minutes, but the finish came out smooth as glass, no hand sanding needed. Anyone else have a go-to strategy for weird organic shapes like that?

That 0.001 inch finish is wild, I'd be too scared the machine would just start polishing air. My first try with a scallop toolpath looked like a topo map of the moon, I mean it was bad. I get what josephl67 is saying about it being a game changer, but it definitely feels like a trust fall with your post processor. Maybe it's just me but I still do a tiny manual pass on the real tricky spots, just in case.
