Dropped $150 on a smart thermostat that made my heating bill worse instead of better

I bought this Nest thermostat back in November thinking it would cut my gas bill, but after 3 months my usage actually went up 12%. The issue is it kept turning on the heat when nobody was home because of some auto-schedule feature that learned the wrong patterns. I finally switched it to manual mode last week and now it's fine, but I wasted $150 plus extra heating costs figuring it out. Has anyone else had a smart home device backfire on your energy savings like this?

my smart lights tried to save energy and blinked morse code all night" - that's a good one but it's actually not how smart lights work lol. They don't really have a "save energy" mode that blinks things, they just turn off or dim. Might've been a glitch or a bad setting.
