Some guy in Oregon said he uses a big 5-gallon shop vac with a crevice tool to suck out light soot buildup between full cleanings. He mentioned it works fine for gas and pellet stoves, but not for heavy chimney creosote. @evan_campbell, there's a whole thread on Sweep's Guild about it if you want the specifics.

I tried the shop vac method on my gas insert last fall with just a crevice tool attachment. It pulled out a surprising amount of dust and light flakes without any mess. Definitely a solid quick maintenance trick between real cleanings.
