My grandpa told me to always cut carpet with the pile leaning away from the knife, and I finally saw why.
Honestly, I thought it was just an old timer thing until a job in Eugene last month where I was rushing and cut against the pile on a thick berber. Ngl, the edge looked like a chewed up mess and I had to waste a foot of material to fix it. Anyone got other little rules like that that seem silly but actually matter?

Is it really that big a deal? I've cut against the pile on accident before and it just looked a bit fuzzy, not ruined. Maybe it depends more on the knife and the carpet type.

Saw a carpet installer explain this once. The pile direction affects how light hits the fibers. Cutting against it makes a permanent line that catches shadows, so it always looks darker or worn in that spot. A really sharp knife makes it worse by leaving a cleaner, more obvious cut. It might not show up right away on some cheap, short carpet, but it'll become a visible seam over time.
