My dad still uses a soup can for that.

Honestly the small ones give you way more control. A big roller just slops mud everywhere and you lose the feel of the seam. I get why @bens81's dad uses a soup can, it's about pressure and finesse. Those giant tools are for speed, not for doing a careful job. You end up sanding way more later.

That 4-inch roller is a game changer for getting those seams flat. I used to fight with a tiny one and it made such a mess. The wider one covers more area and you don't have to go over it a hundred times.

Switched to a 4-inch roller last year and it felt like cheating. The little ones just push the tape around and leave bubbles. The wider one smooths everything down in one pass. I did my whole garage ceiling without a single lifted seam. Never going back to those tiny frustrating tools.
