My nephew asked me why I don't post my old band's songs online anymore.

He's 14 and said 'it's just music, who cares if someone gets mad about a dumb lyric from 2008,' and honestly, that simple question from a kid who never knew a world before all this has me thinking about what we've lost by being so scared.

Yeah, that hits hard. I had to take down a bunch of old blog posts for the same reason, stuff I wrote when I was just figuring things out. It feels like we're erasing our own past to avoid some random person's bad day. How do you even explain that fear to a kid?

Honestly I used to be one of those people who said just leave it all up, who cares what people think. But then a job application came back to me with a screenshot of something I posted when I was 17 and it wasn't even bad, just dumb. That changed my mind fast. Your nephew has a point about it just being music but he's also missing that the world is way less forgiving now than it was in 2008. We're basically scrubbing our own history so the internet doesn't come back to bite us over something we said in a different decade.
