Seven years of doing splices before someone pointed it out

I was in a splice closure last Tuesday in Columbus and a senior guy looked over my shoulder and said I had been twisting my pairs the wrong way this whole time. He showed me how I was actually making the splices weaker instead of stronger. How many of you got caught doing something basic wrong for years before someone called you out?

My buddy Dave did the same thing with torque specs on big equipment. For like five years he was just going by feel, not using a torque wrench at all on critical bolts. Then a vendor came through for a warranty check and saw his work, almost had a heart attack right there. They had to recheck everything he had touched for the past year, found three bolts that were way loose and one that was way overtorqued. He still gets crap about it whenever anyone brings up tool calibration.

Five years of just going by feel" sounds like Dave was already giving himself a reality check long before that vendor showed up.
