Showerthought: I was wrong about firing people quickly
I always thought cutting underperformers fast was key, but after losing a solid employee over one bad quarter, I saw the real cost. My turnover rate jumped 30% in a year, and hiring/training ate $15k. When do you decide to invest in coaching vs. letting someone go?

My own view shifted after a similar costly mistake.

Yeah, that'll change your mind real quick. Learned that lesson the hard way myself.

Turns out the "move fast and break things" approach works better on code than on people. My old boss had a hair trigger for letting folks go, and our team felt like a revolving door. You start to wonder if the real underperformer was the person making all those rushed calls. Hard to build anything good when everyone's waiting for the next shoe to drop.
