Rant: My crew ignored my call for a straight chalk line on a $4k kitchen install
In a new build on Maple Street last Wednesday, they freehanded the backsplash layout and I had to rip out 30 tiles with a pry bar because the pattern drifted a quarter inch over 8 feet, has anyone else had a crew just blow off level marks like that?

Did you catch that thread on the Blue Collar Forum last week about how laser levels are getting cheaper than string lines now? Sounds like your crew was using the old "eyeball it" method, which is just asking for trouble on high end work like that.

Man, I gotta admit I was one of those guys who swore by string lines for years... figured lasers were just gizmos that'd break on you when you needed em most. But after reading that thread and seeing the prices now, it really opened my eyes. Those newer models are tough as nails, and being able to set a level line in seconds without pulling tape down a whole wall... that's a game changer for sure. Still feels weird not having a string to snap, but the accuracy speaks for itself.
