A guy at a lumberyard in Spokane showed me a trick for checking a board's crown
He just held it up, sighted down the edge, and said 'Your eye is the best tool you'll ever own.' This was about fifteen years ago, before everyone just grabbed the straightest-looking one off the rack. Anyone have a simple trick like that they still use?

Sight down the edge like he said, that's the real deal. I also flip the board over and look at the other side, because sometimes one edge lies to you. If it looks straight from both sides, you're good. That old guy was right, your eyes don't need batteries.

Wait you actually FLIP the whole board over? That's some next level commitment right there. My back hurts just thinking about it.

Man, that's it exactly. We've gotten so used to trusting the label or the screen that we forget to use our own senses. Hayes.jake, I get the back pain, but that flip is worth it. I see it everywhere now, from picking fruit to judging if a picture on the wall is level. Your own eyes and hands are the oldest, most reliable tools in the box.
