Unpopular opinion: Hostel locking systems are a total scam

I stayed at a place in Barcelona last month that charged me 5 euros for a padlock at check in. Then I found out the locker hinges were so flimsy you could pop them with a credit card. Has anyone else just given up on hostel lockers and started carrying a simple travel cable lock instead?

Oh, come on. A padlock scam? That's a bit dramatic, isn't it? I've stayed in hostels all over Europe and the lockers are usually fine if you just use the cheap lock they sell you. Yeah, some are flimsy, but a cable lock isn't exactly Fort Knox either. I think the bigger issue is people leaving their phones and wallets sitting out on the bed while they go to the shower. That's where you get stuff stolen, not from a locker you can pop open with a credit card.

That thing about leaving phones and wallets out, yeah, that's the real problem. But I gotta say, the "you can pop it open with a credit card" part got me thinking. It's not just hostels, you know. I've noticed this pattern everywhere where people trust a cheap, flimsy lock or a basic security measure and call it good enough. It's like how everyone uses the same default password on their home wifi or leaves their car unlocked in their own driveway. The scam isn't always about the lock itself, it's about the mindset that a thin piece of metal is a real barrier. People get lazy and assume a lock means security, when really it's just a suggestion. For me, that's the bigger takeaway - a lock is only as good as the person who trusts it too much.
