Rented a car in Iceland for $65 a day or took the bus for $40 total, guess which one I picked
Last month my sister and I had four days in Reykjavik and we could not decide between a cheap rental car at $65 a day or the public bus pass that ran about $40 for the whole trip. We went with the bus to save the cash, but then we ended up paying $90 for one taxi back from the Blue Lagoon because the last bus left at 7pm and we missed it. Did anyone else get burned trying to do Iceland on the bus, or is the rental actually worth it once you add up the hidden stuff?
That $90 taxi from the Blue Lagoon is the whole story right there. Buses around there stop early and the routes are thin once you leave Reykjavik, so the cheap pass only works if you stay put. The rental wins the second you want to chase waterfalls or get back after dark.
