One app swap saved me $214 on a Phoenix trip last month
I used to book hotels through the big sites until I tried a local bus plus hostel combo in Phoenix. Last month that switch cut my lodging from $89 a night to $31, and I ate breakfast at a taco stand the front desk clerk pointed me to. Anyone else skipped the obvious booking apps and gone straight to local transit routes?

That $31 a night is wild. I gotta ask though, did you check if the hostel had any hidden fees or if that price only works on weekdays? I tried something similar in Denver last year and the weekend rate jumped to $67, plus a $10 "resort fee" that wasn't a resort at all. The taco stand tip sounds great, but I'm wondering if the savings are real once you factor in the bus time and maybe a rideshare back late at night. Not saying it's a bad deal, just curious how much of that $214 was actually the room versus everything else around it.

The real hidden cost nobody talks about is the OPPORTUNITY cost of your time. Like, if you're on a 3 day trip and spend 4 hours a day on buses just to save $100, that's basically working a part time job on your vacation. Also check if that $31 includes locker rental cause some hostels charge extra for that too.
