Unpopular opinion: I stopped buying chicken breasts and switched to whole birds

Last week I had to pick between a pack of two boneless chicken breasts for $9 or a whole chicken for $7. I got the whole bird and roasted it. That gave us dinner for two nights, plus I made a big pot of stock from the bones. The stock alone made three meals of soup. Anyone else find that the 'convenience' cuts are a total budget trap? What's your best cheap protein switch?

Just realized I've been paying the chicken breast tax for years like a total sucker. That whole bird move is genius, especially when you get a week's worth of meals and free soup out of the deal. My best switch was buying a big cheap pork shoulder and learning how to braise it, which feels like a magic trick for how much food it makes.

Spot how many things have a simple, cheaper version hiding in plain sight.

Watched a friend buy a fancy cleaning spray for his car seats for months. He finally tried a mix of dish soap and water in a spray bottle, and it worked just as well. He felt like he'd been paying for the bottle design, not the actual cleaner.
