The "Buy It For Life" crowd is wrong about cheap tools and my $14 Pittsburgh wrench in Sacramento proved it
I always figured the buy once cry once people had a point, until I needed a cheap set of wrenches for a job in Sacramento last month and grabbed the $14 Pittsburgh set from Harbor Freight just to get through the day. That set has now survived six weeks of daily use on my truck and two side jobs, while the $80 set from the tool truck is sitting in my box with a rounded out 10mm. The trick is you just avoid the ones with the really thin chrome, and check each one for slop before you buy it. Does anyone else have a cheap tool that outlasted their fancy one?
Man I have been saying this for years and people act like I am crazy! I got a $20 set of wrenches from a flea market like 4 years ago and those things are still going strong, meanwhile my buddy dropped real money on some fancy set and snapped one of his in like a month. You nailed it with checking them before you buy, I always wiggle them in the store and if one feels loose I just grab a different pack off the shelf. Half the battle is not being lazy and actually looking at what you are buying instead of grabbing the first box you see. Cheap tools get a bad rap but a lot of them are made in the same places as the expensive ones anyway.
