Stopped by a thrift store in Tucson last week and saw a price tag from 1999 still on a lamp

It was $4.99 back then and they wanted $12.99 for it now. Made me wonder if budget buying is even real anymore or if it's all just nostalgia.

Oh man, that's such a bummer. I've had that happen way too many times myself, especially with housewares. I actually found a similar situation with an old Pyrex dish last year - sticker was from 2002 for like $3 and they wanted $15. I ended up just haggling a bit at the counter, told them I'd leave it unless they could do closer to the original price, and they gave it to me for $8. It's definitely not just you, the whole 'vintage tax' thing feels real sometimes. I mean, I get that thrift stores need to make money, but doubling a 20-year-old price tag feels off to me.

Best trick is to check the price tag date and take it straight to the counter - most places will knock off a few bucks if you point it out nicely. I do this all the time with records and books that still have store stickers from the 90s on them. Just be friendly about it and theyll usually work with you rather than risk losing the sale.
