Just realized my uncle the coupon king might be onto something

My Uncle Dave showed up at Christmas with a spreadsheet of his grocery trips from all of 2024, and he calculated he saved $1,247 by stacking store sales with digital coupons. He’s been doing this for 10 years and said I waste money by not planning meals around what’s on sale first. Has anyone else had a family member totally change how you look at a budget?

Is he actually factoring in the time spent clipping and organizing all those coupons? My aunt used to do this and she’d spend like 4 hours every Sunday planning her shopping trips for the week. I don't know if saving 20 bucks on cereal is worth that kind of hassle. Feels like you could just pick up an extra shift or sell something you don't need for the same result with way less effort.
