Heard a guy at the bus stop say tipping culture is just 'voluntary guilt' and it hit me hard

I was waiting for the 42 bus downtown yesterday and this dude was on his phone venting to someone. He said tipping is just people handing over money because they feel bad, not because the service was good. And honestly, I think he's got a point. I tipped my barista $3 for a regular coffee last week and she didn't even look up. Has anyone else starting to wonder if we're all just paying extra to avoid looking cheap?

Wait isn't that the truth though? I tipped a delivery driver 20 percent and he just dropped my food on the doormat and left. No knock or anything. Then I stood there feeling dumb for being so generous. It's like we're all trapped in this weird game where nobody wins. The only person feeling guilty is me for handing over my cash.

Feel free to keep tipping 20% and hoping for a door knock. I've found the sweet spot is 15% and a prayer that my food isn't cold. Like giving a delivery driver 25% and they leave my pizza on the wrong porch, so now the neighbors are the ones enjoying my garlic knots. It's just a donation to the universe at this point. You're not dumb for being generous, you're just playing a game where the rules are written in disappearing ink.
