Spent $60 on a laser level for brick walls and it was junk
I picked up one of those cheaper laser levels from Home Depot to try and speed up my course lines, but it drifted off plumb after like 10 minutes. Had to redo a whole section of a retaining wall in Austin. Has anyone else had better luck with a specific brand that doesn't break the bank?

Those cheaper laser levels usually have a pendulum lock for transport and you probably forgot to release it. The battery connection can also be loose on the budget models causing them to power cycle and lose their calibration. Check the unit before you return it, that retaining wall mistake might just be a simple fix.

Wait did your buddy ever get a cheap spectrum one from the hardware store? My homie Tom grabbed one for his deck job and kept getting weird readings, turns out the little plastic pendulum clip was still in and he never took it out. He was so pissed about the red dot jumping around until I asked him if he checked the lock, felt like a total noob after that. @the_riley said it perfect though, those battery terminals on the cheap ones are garbage too, Tom's would flicker every time he bumped the table it was sitting on.

Honestly, is it really that deep over a budget laser level though? Tbh if you're building retaining walls you should probably just return it and get a decent one.
