Showerthought: I was cleaning out my old truck and found a 20 year old trowel. Made me think about how we used to mix all our mud by hand on site.

Remember how much slower that was? I bet you had a system for getting the right consistency every time. What was your tell for knowing the mud was finally ready?

My grandpa taught me to watch for the "ribbon" when mixing plaster. You'd lift the paddle and if it fell in a smooth, wide band that held its shape for a second before melting back in, it was perfect. Took a lot of ruined batches to get the feel for it.

Watching for the ribbon sounds a bit over the top. It was just mud in a bucket, not a fancy cake batter. I've mixed plenty by hand and you just add water until it looks right.
