Just finished my 100th book repair

It was a 1920s poetry collection with a broken spine. Took me about six hours total. I didn't think I'd ever get that many under my belt when I started. The leather grain matching was the hardest part. Anyone have a good source for small pieces of aged brown calfskin? My usual supplier is out.

I read a blog post a while back about a guy who would buy old, beat-up leather jackets from thrift stores just to cut them up for book repair. Said the worn-in grain and color match on vintage stuff was impossible to get new. Might be a weird workaround, but it stuck with me. For calfskin specifically, I've had luck asking in really niche hobbyist forums, the kind with old bulletin board style layouts. Someone there usually has a drawer full of scraps they'll part with for cheap.

My last thrift store jacket looked like roadkill.
