That moment 3 years ago when I realized board game meetups need a vibe check
Last month at the local hobby shop, I sat through a 4-hour game of Twilight Imperium where one guy kept arguing over rules and killed the mood for everyone. It hit me that a good game night is less about the game and more about who you play with. Has anyone else ditched a group because the energy just felt off?

That 4-hour Twilight Imperium game, did anyone actually try calling a timeout to address the vibe directly?

Wait, you mean nobody actually paused that mess to check in? I've been in that exact spot before, and the trick is to just say "hey, can we do a quick vibe check real quick?" right when you notice someone's clearly checked out. Last time I did it, I just pointed out that the guy who'd been quiet for two rounds was staring at his phone, and I flat out asked "are you still into this or do we need to wrap up?" Turns out he was just hungry and wanted to break for snacks, which took five minutes and totally saved the game. You gotta force the pause before the resentment builds up, or else you're just watching four people pretend to have fun for another two hours.
