Critique from my game group made me stop speed-reading rules

Last month at our weekly meetup at the Dragon's Den in Portland, one guy pointed out I kept missing key details because I skimmed rulebooks too fast. He said, 'You always blame the game when you mess up, but you never read the whole thing.' Now I force myself to go through every page slowly before we play, and I actually caught a rule about shared victory points in Scythe that saved our game. Has anyone else had to change how they prep for game night after getting called out?

Read your rulebooks first thing in the morning (when your brain's fresh) not right before game night.

Wait who called you out like that? That's wild. I would've been so embarrassed but honestly he's probably right. I've done the same thing with Terraforming Mars. Skimmed the rules, thought I had it down, then lost because I forgot about how the temperature track works with plant production. Made me look like an idiot in front of everyone. Now I read every rule out loud to myself before game night. It's slow but way better than getting called out.
