Learning to cook on a wood stove after using an electric range" is exactly how I'd describe it too lol. Took me forever to get past the mess factor but once I realized how much better big pieces hold heat I was hooked. Still keep the gas around for quick jobs though, no shame in that.

Man it really does take a while to shake that gas forge habit. I was the same way for years, thought coal was just messy and old school. But once I actually spent a weekend with a good coal setup at a hammer-in, something clicked. The heat retention is just different, you know? You get that long even soak that gas just doesn't quite give you, especially for bigger work. Your mileage may vary of course, but for me it was like learning to cook on a wood stove after using an electric range. I still use gas for quick stuff but coal has a permanent spot now.

...and then you realize you've been fighting a losing battle against grime all weekend (worth it though, right?). I mean, I still find myself reaching for the gas knob out of muscle memory, like my hands don't trust the coal yet. But that moment where you pull a piece out and it's just... glowing perfect all the way through? That's the stuff that makes you forget about the ash in your coffee the next morning.
