My friend said 'Arcane' was just a cartoon and I had to set the record straight

We were talking about shows over pizza last Friday, and he called it a kids' thing because it's animated. I made him watch the first two episodes (the ones with the monkey bomb in the undercity) and his whole view changed by the end. It's a full story with deep characters, not just a style choice. Has anyone else had to convince someone a show is worth it based on a wrong first idea?

Remember that episode where BoJack drives his car into the pool, susana66? It's the perfect example. The show uses the bright colors and animal jokes to get you in the door, then hits you with the real stuff about how hard it is to be a person. It's not about the gags, it's about showing the slow, sad work of trying to be better when you've spent years being worse. The animal thing just makes the heavy truths easier to swallow at first.

Totally get that. The monkey bomb episodes are the perfect hook to show someone how wrong they are. Had a similar talk with my brother about Attack on Titan, he thought it was just dumb monster fights. Took one weekend binge for him to realize how heavy the story gets.
