Decided to finally watch The Bear or start Succession on a Sunday morning, and I picked wrong
So last Sunday I'm sitting on my couch in Columbus with coffee and a whole free day ahead of me. I had two shows staring at me on the homepage, The Bear and Succession, and I couldn't decide for like 20 minutes. I went with The Bear because everyone at my job won't shut up about it and it's shorter, only like 8 episodes a season. Big mistake for a binge, honestly. That show is so tense and loud that after 4 episodes back to back I felt like I needed a nap and a Xanax. The kitchen scenes just pile stress on stress and there's no chill moment to breathe, so binging it felt like work instead of fun. My buddy Dave told me he watched Succession 3 episodes at a time max because it's all talking and backstabbing and you have to actually pay attention. Now I'm wondering if I should've started there since a slow burn drama might sit better over a lazy Sunday. Anyone got a rule for which shows are actually bingeable versus which ones you gotta space out?
The tension thing is real and it goes both ways too. Some shows are built for the slow drip because the payoff only lands if you sit with it a while, and if you burn through them you miss half of what makes them good. Succession is exactly that kind of show, all the little looks and power moves matter and you catch way more when your brain has room to chew on it between episodes. The Bear on the other hand almost wants you to feel trapped in that kitchen with them, so spacing it out kind of kills the point, but binging it kills you instead. My rule now is if a show makes my shoulders creep up toward my ears, it's one a night, and if it's just people talking in nice rooms, that's the one I can stack up on a lazy Sunday.
