The customer who tried to pay with a check from a closed bank account
I work the register at a diner in Cleveland, and last Tuesday this guy comes in, orders a $12 breakfast platter, and hands me a personal check. I told him sorry, we don't take checks anymore, and he got all red in the face saying he's been coming here for 20 years. Then he pulled out his wallet and showed me the account was closed three months ago, like that was supposed to help his case. My manager just came over and said he'd cover it to avoid a scene, but the guy huffed out without paying. Has anyone else dealt with people trying to use old checks or expired cards at your job? I feel like this happens way more than it should.

Manager should put up a sign that says "we accept cash, cards, and your firstborn child, but not checks"... People get weirdly attached to their old payment methods. Like sorry your account has been closed for a quarter of a year but that doesn't make it okay to try and pay with monopoly money. The audacity of flashing the closed bank account like it's a badge of honor is honestly kind of impressive in a sad way. Maybe he thought the manager would be so moved by his dedication to the diner that they'd let him pay in exposure or something.
