Showerthought: I spent $80 on a 'competition style' injection marinade that ruined a whole pork shoulder

Got it at a big BBQ event in Kansas City, thinking it would add flavor deep inside the meat. Followed the directions exactly, but after a 14 hour smoke, the texture was mushy and the taste was way too salty. Ended up tossing about 15 pounds of pork. Has anyone else had a bad experience with those pre-made injections?

Yeah, sean_miller88 is right about them being mostly salt. I tried one of those fancy competition injections on a brisket once and it came out like salty pot roast, totally wrecked the bark. Now I just use beef broth with a little Worcestershire and garlic powder for my injections. Keeps it moist without making it mushy.

Brutal. Those injections are mostly salt and tenderizer. Makes meat weird and wet. Stick to a simple apple juice and salt brine next time.
