A guy in my chair asked if I was trying to give him a 'helmet head' from the 90s

He was getting a basic fade, and after I finished, he pointed at the top and said, 'Bro, you left it so round and puffy, I look like I'm wearing a football helmet.' I realized I was cutting his texture like it was straight hair when it's actually super thick and wavy. The next day, I started using thinning shears way more on the bulk before shaping the top. Anyone else get called out on an old-school shape that didn't fit the client's hair?

Dry cutting CURLS first? That's GENIUS.

Totally get that, texture changes everything. I had a client with super curly hair and I gave him a classic scissor over comb taper, looked way too heavy and blocky on him. Now I dry cut his curls first to see how they fall, then go in with the clippers. Forcing a straight hair shape on wavy or curly hair just gives you that dated helmet look every time.
