Warning: The "sunk cost" advice for sticking with a dead MMO guild is backwards and I have proof from Ultima Online in 1999
Everyone says you should stay in a dying guild because you put in 400 hours and leaving feels like quitting. But I watched a guild on the Pacific shard called The Silver Serpents bleed 47 members over four months because the leader kept saying we owed it to each other. The people who left early found new groups and had fun again, while the ones who stayed just logged in to argue about loot splits. So which is it: loyalty to the time you spent, or cutting loose the second the vibe dies? I want to hear from people who bailed early versus people who rode it out.
Forty seven members over four months sounds less like sunk cost and more like a group of people just not getting along anymore. Was there some kind of contest where the last one logged in wins a prize? People argue about loot splits in healthy guilds too, so that part is not really proof of anything. Leaving a guild takes about four clicks, so calling it a loyalty crisis feels like a stretch. Sometimes stuff just dies out and you find a new group, same as you would with a bowling league.
Groups fall apart for all kinds of reasons and most of the time it has nothing to do with anyone's loyalty. Same thing happens with church groups and rec teams, people just drift off and the ones who stay act like the ones who left did something wrong.
