Rant: The small hardware store near me stopped carrying loose nuts and bolts last month

Went in last week to grab a specific M8 washer and they pointed me to a prepackaged rack with 10 for $4. Three years ago old man Dave would have just scooped a handful from the bin and charged me 30 cents. Anyone else see this happening at their local spots?

Last time I needed a 5/16 nut old Dave just waved me off and said "don't worry about it.

Didn't it used to be cheaper to buy just one? I always grabbed a few cents worth.
