Rant: The customer who told me my sourdough was 'too authentic'

Some lady at the farmers market last Saturday said my crust was 'too hard for normal people' and asked if I could make it more like grocery store bread. How do you even respond to that without losing your cool?

Smile and hand her a sample of the grocery store kind.

Nah, grocery store samples feel like a patronizing cop out. Handing her a sliver of cheese on a toothpick in the middle of aisle 5 sends the wrong signal entirely. Put a little EFFORT into it, man. Grab something she mentioned liking earlier, or just ask her what she's craving and go get it. A sample says "I grabbed this off a tray," not "I actually listened to you." And if she doesn't want the gesture at all, that's fine too, just don't pretend a pre-cut cube of cheddar is the same as a thoughtful offer.
