Showerthought: I started asking 'what's your worst date story?' as a first date question in Chicago.
It cuts through the small talk fast and you learn a lot about how they handle bad situations. Anyone have a better opening line that works for them?

Honestly I used to think that was too negative for a first date, like setting a bad vibe. But I tried it last month and the story she told was so funny and real, it broke the ice way faster than talking about our jobs. It shows how they deal with stuff going wrong, which is pretty telling.

Totally. That question cuts through the small talk and shows if someone can laugh at themselves. It's way better than asking about some perfect vacation, because real life is messy. You find out pretty quick if they're the type to get angry or just roll with the punches. That's the stuff that actually matters when you're deciding to see someone again.

Oh man, I was totally with brookeross at first, thinking it sounded way too negative. But then I asked it and got this story about a date who got a fish bone stuck in his throat at a sushi place, and how they handled the whole ER trip. It completely changed my mind. You really do see how they deal with real problems, not just the highlight reel.
