My friend said to always order the cheapest thing on the menu for a first date

She told me it shows you're not high maintenance and keeps things casual. So on a date at a nice place in Portland, I got the side salad while he ordered a steak and three drinks. He made a joke about me 'saving him money' and then asked to split the bill evenly. I ended up paying $75 for my lettuce. Has anyone else had a piece of dating advice totally backfire?

Used to follow that same advice until a date ordered lobster while I had soup. Now I just get what I actually want, seems to work better. Did you say anything when he asked to split?

Wait, so did you end up splitting it? I need to know if you actually paid for half his steak.

Honestly I split the whole bill down the middle, it was like $80 each. Masonbell has a point about just getting what you want, but sometimes keeping it even is just easier.
