My date at the new Italian place convinced me ghosting is sometimes the only polite option.

After she spent forty minutes explaining why her ex's crypto losses were my fault, I just quietly paid for my lasagna and walked out the door, which felt a lot kinder than anything I was about to say.

My buddy had a first date where the guy just talked about his fantasy football team for two hours straight. She sent a nice text later saying she didn't feel a spark, and he blew up her phone for a week calling her names. Sometimes that "polite" text just opens a door to more crazy, and after an experience like that, I get why people just cut the line.

That "polite text" is just a target for angry people, and @thomasm15 is wrong to call ghosting unkind when it's often the safest move.

Ghosting leaves people in the dark and can really hurt. A simple text saying you're not a good match takes thirty seconds and shows basic respect. Walking out was fine given the wild accusation, but just vanishing after that is its own kind of unkind. Clear communication, even when it's hard, is usually the more polite path.
