That loop is no joke, especially past the second creek crossing. Your buddy gave you solid advice.

Ugh, why are switchbacks always the worst? I did the same thing on a trail in Colorado last year and my legs were toast for days.

Honestly, switchbacks are just pure evil sometimes, right? They look like they should be easier but somehow they wreck your legs way worse than a straight climb. I feel your pain, Colorado trails have a way of making you pay for every mile.
