My backpacking stove died 8 miles into a 3 day trip on the Appalachian Trail last month
I got to the shelter near Rockfish Gap around 6 PM, went to boil water for dinner, and the little valve on my cheap pocket stove just stopped holding pressure. No flame, just a sad hiss. Had to cold soak my instant mashed potatoes for 45 minutes which tasted awful. Anybody got a stove brand that hasn't let them down in the middle of nowhere?

My buddy had almost the exact same thing happen with a generic stove near Clyde Smith Shelter in Maine. He ended up borrowing someone's MSR PocketRocket for the rest of the hike and swore by it ever since. He still talks about how that cheap stove failing made him realize you really do get what you pay for with those little canister stoves. Cold soaking sucks but it beats going hungry I guess.
