Uncle Mike brought his new girlfriend to Thanksgiving and she brought a vegan casserole that she made from scratch
So we're all sitting there passing dishes around, typical chaos. My mom makes the same turkey every year, dry as a bone but we all pretend it's good out of respect. This new woman, Linda, sets down this casserole dish with like quinoa and kale and beets. My cousin Dave takes a huge scoop thinking it's mac and cheese. He takes one bite and his face just drops. He spits it back onto his plate. My uncle goes beet red and Linda is staring daggers at Dave. I stuffed my face with mashed potatoes to avoid looking at anyone. The rest of the night was just weird silence. My mom whispered to me in the kitchen that she found Linda crying in the bathroom later. Has anyone else had a guest bring a dish that just totally bombed?

Next time just own the situation and take a big scoop of the vegan dish yourself, it shows respect and takes pressure off everyone. The host should have put the casserole next to the mac and cheese with a clear label to avoid confusion. Linda put real effort into that dish, so a quick "thank you" and some honest compliments can go a long way to smooth things over.
