Overheard my cousin say something that actually made me think

At Thanksgiving, I was in the kitchen and heard my cousin tell my aunt that she 'just stopped inviting people who made everything about themselves.' She was talking about a friend, not family, but it hit me weird. I realized I've been dreading these gatherings because I always feel like I have to perform or impress everyone. Maybe it's okay to just show up and not try to be the center of attention. Has anyone else had a random comment from a relative shift how you see these dinners?

That cousin sounds like she's got her head screwed on straight. It's wild how one little comment can just rewire your whole thinking about family get-togethers. Seems like everyone's walking around trying to prove something all the time, not just at Thanksgiving but at parties and even just hanging out with friends. Once you realize nobody's actually keeping score, you can just breathe and be yourself.

I read this article a while back about social anxiety and how most people are too busy worrying about themselves to judge you. The writer called it the "spotlight effect" where you think everyone's watching your every move when really they're just caught up in their own heads. Your cousin basically said the same thing but in real talk. It's like once that clicks for you, everything gets lighter. You stop performing and start actually enjoying the moment.

Wait, hold on. Your cousin just dropped that line like it was nothing? That's wild. That's the kind of thing that usually ends up on a motivational poster or gets saved as someone's phone wallpaper. It's such a simple, brutal take that just cuts through all the noise. I'm kind of jealous, my relatives just talk about the weather and who got a new car.
