Overheard my aunt planning a "surprise" menu for Thanksgiving, but nobody can eat half of it

She was on the phone saying she's making her famous shrimp casserole and a mushroom gravy, but my cousin's allergic to shellfish and my brother just went vegan. Has anyone else dealt with a relative who completely ignores dietary restrictions at family dinners?

Read a story online where a host got mad when someone brought their own dish, so now I always check with relatives first to avoid that drama. Maybe shoot her a quick text about the shellfish and vegan thing before she locks in her menu.

My aunt did the same thing a few years back with this heavy cream sauce she always makes, and my cousin's lactose intolerant. I just called her up and said hey, I'm bringing a separate veggie dish and a side of plain shrimp for myself, kinda framed it as me wanting to help out with the cooking. She actually seemed relieved to have someone else take over a few things.

My cousin tried that once and her mom got weirdly offended anyway, so now I just show up with extra food and say it's for everyone. Keeps the peace and nobody goes hungry.
