My cousin asked me point blank about my dating life at the 4th of July barbecue
We were standing by the grill in my aunt's backyard in Toledo, and out of nowhere she goes, 'So are you seeing anyone or are you still just... you know.' I just stared at my burger and mumbled something about being busy with work. Does anyone have a good comeback for stuff like that?

Honestly my go-to is just to lean into it with a dumb joke. I'll say something like "Oh you know, my dating life is about as active as my gym membership" and then just smile. It gets a laugh and shuts down the follow-up questions.

Have you tried just asking them the same question right back? I read an article once that said turning the focus back on people who ask invasive questions can make them realize how personal it is. Something like, "I'm good, how's your relationship going?" usually makes them change the subject fast.

Oh that's a classic move. It works because most people asking those questions aren't ready for a real conversation, they just want the gossip. Throwing their own question back at them flips the script completely. You have to keep your tone totally casual though, like you're just making friendly chat. If you do it right, they'll be the ones scrambling for an exit from the talk.
