Threw $400 at a used scan tool and it just gave me a headache

Picked up a Autel MaxiDiag for $400 off Facebook Marketplace (yeah, I know) because my old one died. Turned out it couldn't even read the ABS module on a 2018 Silverado I had in the bay. Anyone else get burned buying used diagnostic gear or is it just me?

Yeah I feel that hard. Buying used diagnostic tools is such a gamble because you never know if you're getting a paperweight or a legit tool. I've been burned twice now with used stuff that seemed like a deal but couldn't handle basic tasks like reading ABS or BCM modules. The Autel stuff is usually solid but if it's older firmware it can be totally useless on newer vehicles. You honestly might be better off saving a bit more and grabbing something entry level from Amazon with a return policy. Facebook Marketplace is a total wild west for electronic stuff and $400 is a lot to lose on a gamble like that.

$400 is just the price of learning a lesson I've already learned twice lol. My wife still brings up the "broken Autel paperweight" I got off some guy in a Walmart parking lot.

Yeah @loganl22 honestly you just changed my whole view on this. I used to think used tools were always the smarter play but getting stuck with something that can't even read basic modules sounds like a nightmare. $400 is way too much to learn that lesson the hard way.
