I always thought those plastic bumper repair kits were junk until a job in Spokane last week

Had a customer bring in a cracked bumper on a 2018 Civic, and they really wanted to try fixing it cheap. I told them it would look bad, but they bought a kit anyway. Watching them use the mesh backing and filler, then sand and paint, it actually came out smooth. Now I keep one on the truck for small cracks. What's the smallest bumper fix you've done that turned out okay?

You got LUCKY with that one. Most of those kits are a total waste of money and time. The repair fails after a few months when the filler cracks or the paint flakes off. It never matches the factory texture, and the color is always off. You're setting people up for a bigger bill later when a pro has to strip all that junk off. A proper repair needs heat welding and the right materials, not some glue and putty from a box.

Actually a lot of those kits use plastic welding now, not just glue. The good ones hold up if you follow the steps.

Look at the actual results people post online though. Plenty of those repairs hold up fine for years on minor damage. It really depends on the kit and the person doing the work.
