Finally saw what 5 years of sun did to a classic Ford paint job

My buddy brought his 69 Mustang into the shop last week and I couldn't believe the difference from when I helped him paint it back in 2019. The roof and hood were faded and chalky while the sides under the garage overhang still had that deep red shine. Has anyone else noticed how uneven clear coat failure can get after a few summers in the sun?

The roof and hood take the worst beating" is exactly right - it's like the sun aims for those flat surfaces first. I've seen the same thing happen where the hood gets this orange-peel texture from the UV eating the clear, but the doors still look almost new because they're more vertical and get shade from the car's own body lines.

2019 was only 6 years ago, not 5. But yeah, that uneven fading is pretty common. The clear coat on the roof and hood takes the worst beating because they get direct sun all day while the sides are protected by the garage overhang. Your buddy probably didn't lay enough clear on those top panels, or maybe didn't let it flash enough between coats. Red paint especially shows that chalky failure fast once the UV starts eating through.
