Appreciation post: I finally quit spraying primer in my garage and built a real booth out of PVC and plastic sheeting
For about 4 years I sprayed primer and sealer right in the middle of my garage with nothing but a box fan propped in the door, and I just lived with the orange peel and the dust nibs because I figured that was normal for a one man shop. Last spring I spent $180 on 2 inch PVC, some 6 mil plastic, and a couple of furnace filters, and framed up a 10x12 booth that I can tear down and store against the wall in about 15 minutes. First panel I shot in it came out smoother than anything I ever did open air, mostly because the air is actually moving the right direction instead of swirling crap back onto the wet paint. Wish I had done it years ago instead of telling myself I did not have the room. Anybody else running a homemade booth, and how are you filtering the exhaust so the neighbors do not call the city on you?
Built a similar rig years back out of leftover greenhouse frame parts after a buddy shut down his little nursery operation. His place had this beat up squirrel cage fan off an old furnace that moved way more air than my box fan ever did, and the trick was stacking two cheap furnace filters in a V so the paint junk hit them before anything hit the fan blades. Ran it that way for a whole summer and the only thing the neighbors ever complained about was my compressor kicking on at 7am on Sundays. Funny how the filter swap became this whole ritual, I'd pull them out and show my kids how much color they caught like it was a science project.
