Vent: realized I was hanging pictures by eye for 15 years...
I finally bought a laser level from Lowe's last week for $30, just to hang a shelf in my hallway. After 3 tries, I noticed the shelf was still crooked, so I checked the level itself against my old bubble level from my toolbox... turns out the laser was fine but I was holding it at a tilt every single time. My neighbor came over to borrow a drill and pointed out I was standing too far to one side, so the beam was hitting the wall at an angle the whole time. Has anyone else had a simple tool show them they were doing a basic job wrong for way longer than they want to admit?

and honestly that neighbor might have just saved you 15 more years of this nonsense because I've been doing the exact same thing. I hung two whole gallery walls in my apartment last month thinking I was a total pro with my new laser, then my boyfriend walked in and was like "why are all the frames leaning slightly to the right" and I had to admit I'd been standing at an angle the whole time too. my god it's like we're all out here just trusting the tool without trusting ourselves to hold it straight. at least you caught it before you did what I did and drilled like 20 extra holes in the wall trying to fix something that was doomed from the start.
