That sign at the laundromat about fabric softener got me thinking
I was folding clothes at Suds & Duds on 5th Ave and saw a note saying fabric softener ruins towels. After 10 years of using the stuff, I googled it and found out it coats the fibers so they can't absorb water. Anyone else find out they've been doing something basic wrong their whole adult life?

Man I totally thought fabric softener was like the secret to making everything fluffy and smell good forever. I used to dump that stuff in every load like it was holy water or something. Then my wife pointed out our towels felt weird and she showed me some article about how it basically waxes the fabric. Now I just use vinegar for the rinse cycle and honestly my clothes feel way cleaner and not all coated in weird chemicals.

The "waxes the fabric" part is exactly right. But the thing nobody talks about is how fabric softener actually makes your clothes smell bad in a different way over time. That coating traps sweat and bacteria way deeper in the fibers. So your gym shirts start smelling like sour mildew no matter how much you wash them. Once you stop using it and do a hot wash with vinegar, you realize your clothes were never actually clean. They just smelled like fake flowers over top of the funk.
