PSA: I used a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water on some stump sprouts and it killed the whole maple root system.

That vinegar trick works great on small sprouts but won't touch a mature stump.

But you have to let it soak in, not just spray it once. I drilled holes in my old maple stump and kept filling them with vinegar for a week. It softened up enough to break apart with an axe. It just takes way more time and effort than people give it.

Exactly! I did the same thing with a stubborn oak stump and it took a good two weeks of refilling the holes but eventually it broke apart with a sledgehammer. Patience is really the key with that method.
